Can you edit a Bluesky post after posting?
No. As of October 2026 Bluesky has no edit button. To fix a post you delete it and post again, which loses its likes and reposts. You can still change who can reply, detach quote posts and hide replies after posting.
So if you are asking whether you can edit Bluesky posts after posting, the practical answer is to catch the mistake before the post goes out. Below is what you can change, what you cannot, and what a delete and repost costs you.
What you can change after posting
Bluesky keeps interaction settings in small records that sit next to the post, not inside it. That is why these can change after the post is live while the post itself cannot. Limits come from the threadgate and postgate lexicons.
Reply settings apply to the whole thread, since the threadgate is tied to the thread's first post. If replies are getting out of hand, limiting who can reply and hiding the worst ones is usually better than deleting the post and losing everything on it.
What you cannot change
Anything that is part of the post itself is fixed once it is published:
- The text, including typos and links
- Images or video attached to the post
- Alt text on those images
- Mentions, links and hashtags in the text
- Which thread a reply belongs to
Alt text included
People often search for how to edit alt text on Bluesky after posting. You cannot. Alt text lives inside the post, so a missing or wrong description means deleting and posting again. Write it first. The Bluesky app allows up to 2,000 characters of alt text per image, and the alt text generator can draft one for you. What happens when you delete and repost
Deleting is the only way to fix a published post, so it helps to know what goes with it.
- Likes and reposts: they belonged to the old post. The new post starts at zero.
- Replies: they are other people's posts, so they stay up, now replying to a post that no longer exists.
- Quote posts: they stay up too, but the post they quote is gone.
- Links to the post: any link someone shared now points at a post that no longer exists.
That is the real cost of a typo on Bluesky. A post that has already picked up replies and reposts is often better left alone, with a correction in a reply.
How to avoid needing an edit
Since you cannot edit a Bluesky post after posting, the time to edit is before. Two ways to get that time:
Bluesky drafts. The Bluesky app added drafts in February 2026 (social-app #9825). You can save a post, come back to it and fix it before you hit post. Drafts are not scheduled, so you still publish by hand.
A scheduling tool. A scheduled post is still a draft until it sends, so you can reread it later with fresh eyes. In OpenTweet you can change the text, images, time and target networks of a scheduled Bluesky post right up to send time, in the composer or through the API:
curl -X PUT https://opentweet.io/api/v1/posts/POST_ID \
-H "Authorization: Bearer ot_YOUR_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{ "text": "Fixed the typo before it went out." }'Once a post has been sent, OpenTweet will not edit it either. The API answers with an error for any post that has already been posted.
Before you schedule, check the length in the Bluesky character counter. A post over 300 graphemes is rejected, and the Bluesky limits page covers images, video and alt text. The guide to scheduling Bluesky posts walks through the setup.

Frequently asked questions
Can you edit Bluesky posts after posting?
No. As of October 2026 Bluesky has no edit button. To fix the text, an image or the alt text, you delete the post and post it again. The new post starts with zero likes, reposts and replies.
Why can't you edit Bluesky posts?
Bluesky has not shipped an edit feature, and we have not found an official statement from Bluesky that explains why. What we can say is that, as of October 2026, there is no merged change in the official Bluesky app that adds post editing.
Can you edit alt text on a Bluesky post after posting?
No. Alt text is part of the post, so it has the same rule as the text: to change it you delete the post and post it again with the corrected alt text. Write it before you post, the Bluesky app allows up to 2,000 characters of alt text per image.
Does deleting a Bluesky post remove its replies and quote posts?
No. Replies and quote posts are separate records owned by the people who wrote them, so deleting your post does not delete them. They stay up, but they now point at a post that no longer exists.
Does deleting a Bluesky post remove reposts and likes?
The likes and reposts pointed at the old post, and the old post is gone. When you post again, the new post is a new record, so it starts from zero and nothing carries over.
Can a third-party app edit a Bluesky post through the API?
We have not verified that any app can edit a published Bluesky post in a way the Bluesky app shows as edited, so we do not claim it. OpenTweet does not edit published posts. It lets you edit a scheduled post until it is sent.
Can I edit a scheduled Bluesky post in OpenTweet?
Yes. Until the post is sent you can change its text, images, time and target networks in the composer, or with PUT /api/v1/posts/{id}. Once it has been posted, the API returns an error and the post can no longer be edited.
