Social Media Character Counter for X, Bluesky and LinkedIn

This social media character counter checks one draft against three networks at once, each in the unit that network really counts: X weighted characters, Bluesky graphemes and bytes, and LinkedIn characters.

What are the social media character limits?

X allows 280 weighted characters (links count as 23), Bluesky 300 characters counted as graphemes, and LinkedIn 3,000 characters. Paste once below to see all three counts.

Why one post gets three different counts

X weights the text

X counts with twitter-text. Every link costs 23 no matter how long it is, and most emoji cost 2. A post with a long URL can look over 280 elsewhere and still fit on X.

Bluesky counts what you see

Bluesky counts graphemes, so a flag or a family emoji is 1. It also caps text at 3,000 bytes, and a link sent through the API costs its full length.

LinkedIn has room, but folds early

3,000 characters is plenty for most posts. The real limit is the "see more" cut, roughly 200 characters or 3 lines on desktop. LinkedIn publishes no official number, so treat it as an estimate.

Write for the strictest network

When you cross-post, the tightest limit wins. On a standard X account that is usually X at 280, but a long link can push the same text over 300 on Bluesky first. Long-form text belongs on LinkedIn or in a thread.

Writing in Markdown?

LinkedIn posts are plain text, so **bold**, # headings and [text](url) links show with every symbol visible. Remove them, or convert the text with Markdown to LinkedIn.

Post one draft to X, Bluesky and LinkedIn at once

Pick the networks on one post in the OpenTweet composer, or pass them in the platforms field of one call to the REST API. Each network is checked against its own limit when it publishes, and a thread goes out as reply threads on X and Bluesky and as one post on LinkedIn.

Social media character counter FAQ

What are the character limits on X, Bluesky and LinkedIn?

As of October 2026, an X post allows 280 weighted characters, or 25,000 with X Premium. A Bluesky post allows 300 graphemes and 3,000 bytes of UTF-8 text, per the app.bsky.feed.post lexicon. A LinkedIn post allows 3,000 characters, which OpenTweet counts in UTF-16 code units.

Why does the same post get three different counts?

Each network counts in a different unit. X weights text: every link counts as 23 and most emoji count as 2. Bluesky counts graphemes, the characters you see, so an emoji counts as 1. LinkedIn counts UTF-16 code units, so most emoji count as 2 and a link counts at its full length.

How do links count on each network?

On X every link counts as 23, however long it is. On Bluesky a link sent through the API or OpenTweet counts at its full length, while the bsky.app composer shortens how it is shown. On LinkedIn a link counts at its full length.

Do spaces and line breaks count?

Yes, on all three. Every space and every line break counts as one character toward the limit on X, Bluesky and LinkedIn.

Where does the LinkedIn "see more" fold fall?

LinkedIn does not publish a number. This counter estimates it at about 200 characters or 3 lines on desktop, whichever comes first. Treat it as approximate, and keep the hook of your post above it.

Does LinkedIn support Markdown or bold text?

No. LinkedIn posts are plain text, so Markdown like **bold**, *italic*, # headings and [text](url) links show up with the symbols exactly as typed. The counter flags them so you can remove them before posting.

What happens when a post fits one network but not another?

In OpenTweet, each network is checked against its own limit when the post publishes. A post that does not fit one network is not published there, the post records why, and it still goes out on the other networks you picked. Split long text into a thread first if you want it on X and Bluesky.
