Automate LinkedIn postswith AI agents and an API

Automate LinkedIn posts the way LinkedIn allows: through the official Posts API, not a bot clicking around your browser. Let Claude, ChatGPT, n8n or your own script draft and schedule posts to your profile with one REST or MCP call.

Can you automate LinkedIn posts?

Yes. LinkedIn's official Posts API lets an app publish to your personal profile with the w_member_social permission, so an AI agent or workflow can draft and schedule posts without browser automation. OpenTweet wraps that API in one REST or MCP call.

What you can safely automate, and what you should not

The line is not AI versus human. It is the official API versus automating your logged-in session.

The w_member_social permission lets an app post on behalf of the member who approved it. Tools that automate comments, likes, invites or messages through your browser are what the LinkedIn User Agreement prohibits. Read the clauses.

Four ways to automate LinkedIn posts with OpenTweet

Connect LinkedIn once by signing in on linkedin.com. After that, every route below posts through the same official API to your personal profile.

REST API

POST /api/v1/posts with "platforms": ["linkedin"] and a scheduled_date. Omit the date to save a draft, or send publish_now to post at once. See the API docs.

Hosted MCP for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor

Point any MCP client at https://mcp.opentweet.io/mcp. The post tools take the same platforms parameter, so an agent can queue a LinkedIn post in one tool call. Setup is on the LinkedIn MCP page.

n8n, Make and Zapier

Any workflow tool that can send an HTTP request can call the REST endpoint. Walkthrough: post to LinkedIn from n8n, or start from the n8n workflow template.

The web scheduler

Write or paste the post, tick LinkedIn, and pick a time on the calendar. Agent-made drafts land in the same queue for review. More on the LinkedIn scheduler.

schedule a LinkedIn post
curl -X POST https://opentweet.io/api/v1/posts \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer ot_your_key" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
"text": "Three things we learned shipping our API in public this quarter.",
    "platforms": ["linkedin"],
    "scheduled_date": "2026-10-20T08:30:00Z"
  }'

Add "x" or "bluesky" to the platforms array to send the same post to those networks too.

Raw LinkedIn API versus OpenTweet

You can post to LinkedIn via API yourself. Here is what that involves, and what a single OpenTweet call replaces.

Raw LinkedIn APIOpenTweet
Developer appCreate one and add Share on LinkedIn in the Products tabNone. Sign in with LinkedIn
OAuthBuild the sign-in flow and store the tokenHandled. Your code holds only an ot_ key
Version headerSend a monthly LinkedIn-Version on every call and move off old versions before they sunsetHandled on our side
ImagesRegister each image with the Images API, upload the bytes, then reference the image URNPass media_urls on the post
Text escapingEscape little Text reserved characters such as ( ) [ ] # @ or text gets cutEscaped for you, so #hashtags and @mentions post as plain text
Token lifetime60 days, no refresh token. Your users sign in againSame 60 days. One-click reconnect and an email when it lapses
SchedulingNo scheduling endpoint. Run your own queue and cronSend scheduled_date

Building it yourself is a fine choice for one internal script. The Python guide walks through it.

A sample agent flow: draft, review, schedule

Automation that keeps a human in the loop before anything reaches your feed.

  1. The agent drafts

Claude, ChatGPT or an n8n AI node writes the post from your notes, a changelog or a blog link, then calls OpenTweet without a scheduled_date. The post is saved as a draft for LinkedIn.

  2. You review

Open the draft in OpenTweet, read it as your audience would, and edit anything that sounds generic. This is the step that keeps automated posts from reading like AI slop.

  3. It gets scheduled

Pick a time on the calendar, or have the agent update the draft with a scheduled_date once you approve it. OpenTweet calls the LinkedIn Posts API at that time.

  4. You check the outcome

Each network reports its own result. If the LinkedIn sign-in has expired, the LinkedIn post is held and OpenTweet emails you to reconnect.

What OpenTweet does not do on LinkedIn

Stated plainly, so you know before the trial rather than after.

Built

  • Publishing and scheduling to your personal profile
  • Text posts up to 3,000 characters
  • Up to 4 images from the composer, two or more as a multi-image post
  • Threads combined into one LinkedIn post
  • REST API, hosted MCP, and the web scheduler

Not built

  • Company Pages
  • Video, which is skipped on LinkedIn
  • Document and PDF carousels
  • Polls
  • Clickable @mentions and #hashtags. They post as plain text
  • LinkedIn analytics. Nothing is read back
  • Comments, likes, invites or messages

Reconnect every 60 days

LinkedIn gives self-serve apps a 60-day sign-in with no refresh token. Every 60 days you reconnect in one click. If the sign-in lapses with LinkedIn posts queued, those posts are held and OpenTweet emails you.

Frequently asked questions

Can you automate LinkedIn posts?

Yes. LinkedIn's official Posts API lets an app publish to your personal profile with the w_member_social permission, so an AI agent or workflow can draft and schedule posts without browser automation. OpenTweet wraps that API in one REST or MCP call.

Will LinkedIn ban me for automating posts?

Publishing your own posts through the official API is access LinkedIn grants to apps on purpose: you approve the app on linkedin.com and it posts for you. The risk comes from tools that drive your logged-in browser session or automate comments, likes, connection requests and messages, which the LinkedIn User Agreement prohibits. OpenTweet does none of those. It only publishes and schedules posts to your profile.

Does LinkedIn penalize AI-generated posts?

AI-written posts are not banned. In July 2026 LinkedIn added a "Seems like AI slop" report button, and in August 2026 it said content it classifies as AI slop gets 40% fewer views. The fix is a human review step: let the agent draft, then read and edit before anything is scheduled.

Is the LinkedIn API free?

Yes. LinkedIn's API Terms say the APIs are currently provided for free. Posting to your own profile uses the self-serve Share on LinkedIn product, which any developer can add from the Products tab in the Developer Portal. What it costs is setup and upkeep: a developer app, OAuth, a monthly version header and a sign-in that expires every 60 days.

Can I post to LinkedIn via API without building my own app?

Yes. With OpenTweet you sign in with LinkedIn once, then call POST https://opentweet.io/api/v1/posts with your ot_ API key and "platforms": ["linkedin"]. OpenTweet holds the LinkedIn sign-in and makes the LinkedIn Posts API call for you, so you never create a LinkedIn developer app.

Can I automate LinkedIn posts with Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes. Add the hosted OpenTweet MCP server at https://mcp.opentweet.io/mcp to Claude, Cursor or another MCP client, and the post tools take a platforms parameter that accepts "linkedin". ChatGPT can use the same server where its plan allows MCP write tools, or a Custom GPT Action that calls the REST API.

Does LinkedIn have a post scheduler API?

No. The LinkedIn Posts API publishes immediately, so every LinkedIn scheduler keeps the post in its own queue and calls the API at the chosen time. In OpenTweet you send a scheduled_date in ISO 8601 and the post waits in your queue until then.

Can I automate posts to a LinkedIn Company Page?

Not with OpenTweet. It posts to the personal profile of the member who connected. Company Page posting needs the Community Management API, which LinkedIn reviews, and OpenTweet does not support Company Pages.

How much does it cost to automate LinkedIn posts with OpenTweet?

LinkedIn is on every paid plan: Pro at $11.99 a month with 1 LinkedIn account, Advanced at $29 with 3, and Agency at $49 with 10. The REST API and the MCP server are included, with no per-post fee.

Hand LinkedIn posting to your agent

Sign in with LinkedIn, create an API key, and your agent or workflow can draft and schedule profile posts through the official API. Every plan from $11.99 a month.
