Bluesky characters141 / 300

Graphemes. A styled letter is 1 grapheme, same as a plain one.

Bluesky bytes267 / 3,000

UTF-8 bytes. Most styled letters are 4 bytes, a plain letter 1.

Styled letters are not read like normal text

Screen readers may read styled letters one at a time or by their Unicode names, and a styled word may not match a plain-text search on Bluesky. Style a few words, not the whole post, and keep names, keywords, hashtags and links plain. Add alt text to images rather than putting text in them.

Why Bluesky has no bold, italic or Markdown

A Bluesky post is a plain text string plus a list of facets. A facet marks a range of the text as something special, and the post record defines exactly three kinds: a mention, a link and a hashtag. There is no facet for bold, italic, headings or lists, so Bluesky formatting text in the usual sense does not exist. Markdown is not parsed either: **bold** and [text](url) appear exactly as typed.

What this generator does instead is swap letters for look-alike characters from Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. They are real characters, so they paste anywhere, but they are not the letters a reader, a screen reader or search expects. To see how facets are built, try the Bluesky Facet Generator.

Bluesky caps post text at 300 graphemes and 3,000 UTF-8 bytes. Styling alone will not reach the byte cap inside 300 graphemes, so the 300 is the limit to watch. The full counting rules, including links and emoji, are in the Bluesky Character Counter.

Using bold and italic well on Bluesky

Bold the hook, not the post

One bold line at the top stands out in the feed. A fully styled post is harder to read and harder to find.

Keep searchable words plain

A styled word may not match a plain-text search. Your name, your product and the topic you want to be found for belong in plain text.

Leave hashtags and mentions alone

Styled letters inside a hashtag or handle stop it from being a working tag or mention. This generator skips anything starting with # or @, and links.

Use Plain text to undo

Select styled words and click Plain text to turn them back into normal letters before you reuse the post somewhere else.

Bluesky Bold and Italic Text FAQ

How do I make bold text on Bluesky?

Bluesky has no bold button and does not render Markdown, so **bold** shows up with the asterisks. Bold-looking text on Bluesky is made of Unicode letters that are drawn bold, pasted in as ordinary text. Type your post in this generator, select the words, click Bold, then copy and paste into Bluesky.

How do I write in italics on Bluesky?

The same way as bold. Select the words above, click Italic, and copy. The italic letters are Unicode characters, so they survive being pasted into the Bluesky composer, a reply or your profile description.

Does Bluesky support Markdown?

No. A Bluesky post is plain text plus facets, and the post record defines three facet types: mention, link and hashtag. There is no facet for bold, italic, headings or [text](url) links, so Markdown syntax is shown literally. Styled Unicode letters are the only way to get a bold or italic look.

Do bold letters count more against the Bluesky 300 character limit?

Not against the 300. Bluesky counts graphemes, and a bold letter is 1 grapheme, the same as a plain one. It does use more bytes: most styled letters are 4 bytes of UTF-8 instead of 1. Bluesky also caps post text at 3,000 bytes, but a fully bold 300-character post is about 1,200 bytes, so the 300 is the limit you hit first.

Can screen readers read bold text on Bluesky?

Not reliably. Screen readers may read styled letters one by one, by their Unicode names, or skip them, and a styled word may not match a plain-text search on Bluesky. Style a few words, not the whole post, and keep names, keywords, hashtags and links plain.

Can I schedule formatted posts to Bluesky?

Yes. Styled letters are plain Unicode text, so they publish as written. OpenTweet posts to Bluesky, X and your LinkedIn personal profile from one draft or one API call, counts Bluesky in graphemes against 300, and turns links, @mentions and #hashtags into Bluesky facets. Plans start at $11.99/mo with a 7-day trial.
