Bluesky Banner Size and Profile Picture Guide

The Bluesky banner size is a 3:1 ratio, and the profile picture is a square. Drop an image to crop it to either shape, check it against the 1 MB limit, and export a JPEG that fits.

Bluesky banner size

Bluesky crops banners to a 3:1 ratio and accepts PNG or JPEG up to 1 MB. Bluesky publishes no pixel size, so use a 3:1 image such as 1500x500 or 3000x1000 and keep it under 1 MB.

Add a profile picture too and it appears over the banner here.

Checks for this file

  • File type: PNG or JPEG

Export a JPEG under 1 MB

Crops to the frame above, up to 3000x1000, and lowers quality until it fits.

Bluesky profile and image limits

These come from the Bluesky profile and post lexicons (app.bsky.actor.profile and app.bsky.embed.images) and the open source Bluesky app. None of them names a pixel size for the banner or avatar.

Is there an official Bluesky banner size in pixels?

No. Bluesky sets the shape (3:1) and the file limit (1,000,000 bytes), not the pixel count. 1500x500 and 3000x1000 are both 3:1. A larger image looks sharper on big screens but uses more of the 1 MB budget, so a 3000x1000 photo usually needs JPEG compression to fit. For X, the Twitter header size guide covers the same question.

Tips for a Bluesky banner that looks right

Start at 3:1

An image that is already 3:1 is shown whole. Any other shape is cropped, so decide the crop yourself rather than leaving it to the app.

Mind the avatar

Your profile picture sits over the lower left of the banner. Keep text and faces away from that corner.

Count bytes, not megabytes

The limit is 1,000,000 bytes. A file your computer lists as 0.99 MB can still be over it.

JPEG for photos

A photo saved as PNG is often several times the size of the same photo as JPEG. PNG suits flat graphics and logos.

Writing the rest of the profile? The display name allows 64 graphemes and the bio 256. The Bluesky character counter counts post text in graphemes too, and the Bluesky image checker handles post images, which have a 2,000,000 byte limit of their own.

Profile set up. Now schedule your Bluesky posts.

OpenTweet schedules posts to Bluesky, X and LinkedIn from one draft. Post images over Bluesky's 2,000,000 byte limit are resized when they publish, up to 4 per post. See the Bluesky scheduler.

Bluesky Banner Size FAQ

What is the Bluesky banner size?

Bluesky crops banners to a 3:1 ratio and accepts PNG or JPEG up to 1 MB. Bluesky publishes no pixel size, so use a 3:1 image such as 1500x500 or 3000x1000 and keep it under 1 MB.

What is the Bluesky banner aspect ratio?

3:1. The Bluesky app crops the banner at an aspect of 3 to 1 (the UserBanner component in the open source social-app). A wider or taller image is cropped to that shape, which is why this tool lets you drag the crop before you export.

What is the Bluesky profile picture size?

The avatar is a square image, PNG or JPEG, up to 1,000,000 bytes, and it is shown as a circle. Bluesky gives no pixel size here either. 400x400 and 1000x1000 are both square, and this tool exports at up to 1000x1000.

Why is my Bluesky banner too large when my computer says it is under 1 MB?

The profile record allows 1,000,000 bytes. Some file managers, Windows Explorer among them, count in units of 1,024 bytes, so a 1,040,000 byte file shows as about 0.99 MB. This tool compares the exact byte count and exports a JPEG that fits.

Is the banner limit the same as the limit for images in posts?

No. The banner and avatar each allow 1,000,000 bytes, while a post can carry up to 4 images of up to 2,000,000 bytes each. An image that posts fine can be too big for your profile.

How long can a Bluesky display name and bio be?

The display name allows 64 graphemes and the bio (description) allows 256 graphemes. A grapheme is what you see as one character, so an emoji made of several code points still counts as one.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The image is read, cropped and re-encoded in this browser tab. There is no upload request in this page, which you can confirm in the network panel of your browser dev tools.
