Can ChatGPT dots post to X?
Yes on Business Premium and Enterprise, no on Pro. A dot works through the plugins installed on your ChatGPT account, so it can post to X once you add a plugin with a posting tool, like OpenTweet's MCP server. The catch is OpenAI's plan rule: custom MCP servers may write only on Business and Enterprise/Edu. On Pro they are read and fetch only, so a Pro dot can read your X queue and stats but cannot post.

What a dot can do with X, by plan
Two separate gates decide it: whether your plan has dots, and whether your plan lets custom MCP plugins write.
OpenAI does not say in so many words that a dot uses custom MCP plugins. Its docs say a dot can use "supported plugins installed and enabled for your account", and that each plugin must be permitted to perform the action. Test with a read-only request before you rely on it.
Set up the OpenTweet plugin
On Business and Enterprise, an admin or owner needs the Create plugins with MCPs permission. Setup is on ChatGPT web or the desktop app, not mobile.
- Start an OpenTweet account and connect your X account (plus LinkedIn or Bluesky if you want them).
- In ChatGPT, open Plugins, select the plus button, then Add custom MCP server.
- Name it OpenTweet and paste the URL below as the public endpoint. Choose OAuth for authentication.
- Read the risk warning, select I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin. Sign in to OpenTweet when asked.
- Review the tools ChatGPT found. In a workspace, publish the plugin from Drafts so members can use it.
- In your dot's profile, open Customize, then Plugins, and check that OpenTweet is connected.
https://mcp.opentweet.io/mcpThe dot gets 43 tools, including opentweet_create_tweet (draft), opentweet_schedule_tweet, opentweet_batch_schedule, opentweet_publish_tweet and read tools like opentweet_list_tweets and opentweet_get_analytics. OpenTweet issues a long-lived key through OAuth, so the plugin does not need refresh tokens to stay connected.
Add one custom rule before the first post
In Customize, Custom rules, add a rule for "publishing or scheduling posts to X" and set it to Ask before taking action. Then test: "List my OpenTweet accounts and this week's scheduled posts. Do not change anything." After that, ask for one draft and check it in your OpenTweet queue.Good jobs for a dot that can post
- "Every Monday at 8am Eastern, draft five X posts from last week's shipped GitHub PRs and schedule them Tuesday to Saturday at 10am. Ask me before scheduling."
- "When our launch channel in Slack posts a release, write a short X thread and save it as a draft."
- "Each Friday, read my OpenTweet analytics and tell me which three posts did best and why."
- "Keep my queue at least three days full. If it drops below that, draft more from the content doc in Drive."
Dots can decide when to wake up and follow up, so ask it to confirm the schedule and time zone when you set a recurring task. Recurring work shows under Scheduled in the dot's profile, where you can pause or cancel it.
On Pro or Plus? What works instead
A Pro dot can still be useful with the plugin connected: it can read what is scheduled and how posts performed. For the posting itself:
- Custom GPT with an Action: calls OpenTweet's REST API and works on Plus and Pro. See post to X from ChatGPT.
- Claude: custom connectors can write on every plan, Free included. See can Claude post to X.
- Grok Bot: add the same URL as a custom connector. See give Grok Bot the ability to post.
- OpenTweet itself: AI Studio writes posts in your voice and the scheduler sends them, from $19.99 a month ($29 for 3 X accounts).

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT dots post to X?
Only through a plugin that has a posting tool, and only on a plan where that plugin may write. OpenAI says a dot can use supported plugins installed and enabled for your account. A custom MCP plugin such as OpenTweet can post on Business and Enterprise/Edu. On ChatGPT Pro, OpenAI limits custom MCP servers to read and fetch, so a Pro dot can read your queue and analytics but not post.
What are OpenAI dots?
Always-on personal agents in ChatGPT, announced at OpenAI DevDay on September 29, 2026. Each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra with its own cloud computer and browser, works through your plugins, can run scheduled and recurring tasks, and can be reached in ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams.
Which ChatGPT plans include dots?
Pro (not in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK), Business Premium in all supported regions, and Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare as a beta that a workspace admin turns on. The first dot is included at no extra cost on Pro and Business Premium.
Why can a Pro dot not post with a custom plugin?
OpenAI's help article on custom MCP servers says full MCP is only available to Business and Enterprise/Edu users, and that Pro users can connect custom MCP servers with read and fetch permissions. Posting is a write action, so it is blocked on Pro until OpenAI changes that rule.
Will a dot post without asking me?
That depends on your custom rules. Each action can be set to take action without asking, take action if pre-approved, ask before taking action, or hand off to you. "Pre-approved" means you asked for that exact action in your prompt, and asking for a draft does not authorize sending it. For posting, use "ask before taking action" and have the dot schedule posts so they sit in your queue first.
Can a dot post to X on a schedule?
Yes, on a plan with write access. Dots run recurring tasks you set up (managed under Scheduled in the dot's profile). A good pattern is a weekly task that drafts the week's posts and schedules them in OpenTweet, so the actual sends happen on OpenTweet's side at the right minute. OpenTweet Pro is $19.99 a month with no per-post fee.
Do I need an X developer account for a dot to post?
No. OpenTweet holds the X connection. The dot only calls OpenTweet's MCP server at https://mcp.opentweet.io/mcp after you sign in through OAuth. Posting through the X API yourself would need a developer app, OAuth 2.0 and pay-per-use billing of $0.015 a post, or $0.20 with a link.
