X Original Content Rewards: The Complete 2026 Guide
Short answer: X is retiring Creator Revenue Sharing. The final payout on the old program is September 7, 2026. Enrollment for its replacement, Original Content Rewards, opens September 8, 2026. To qualify you need an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription, to be 18 or over, 500 verified followers, and 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in the prior 90 days with replies excluded. Payouts are biweekly through Stripe and X Money.
If you have been earning from ads in your reply threads, that money stops after September 7. What replaces it is not a tweak to the same formula. It measures something different, pays on a different cadence, and rules out a category of content that used to earn.
What actually changed
Creator Revenue Sharing paid you a cut of the ads X served in the replies under your posts. The mechanics of that pushed people toward a specific kind of posting: bait a long argument in the replies, and the ad impressions in that thread paid you. The threshold was 5 million organic impressions over three months.
Original Content Rewards pays on impressions of the post itself, in the Home Timeline, from paying Premium users, when the post was at least 50 percent visible on screen. The threshold is 500,000 verified impressions over the prior 90 days, and replies are excluded from that count.
| Creator Revenue Sharing | Original Content Rewards | |
|---|---|---|
| Ends / starts | Final payout Sept 7, 2026 | Enrollment opens Sept 8, 2026 |
| What pays | Ads in replies under your posts | Verified Home Timeline impressions on your original posts |
| Impression gate | 5,000,000 in 3 months | 500,000 verified in 90 days, replies excluded |
| Follower gate | 500 followers | 500 verified followers |
| Subscription | X Premium | Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, active |
| Age | 18+ | 18+ |
| Cadence | Final payment Sept 7, 2026 | Biweekly |
| Payout rail | Stripe | Stripe and X Money |
| Content rule | Any post that drew replies | Original only. Reposted or reproduced content does not qualify |
The headline reads like the bar dropped by a factor of ten. Read the second column again. The 500,000 has four qualifiers stacked on it that the 5 million did not have: verified, Home Timeline, original posts, at least half visible. If a large share of your old impressions came from replies under bigger accounts, the new gate is not easier. It is a different gate that your existing numbers may not clear at all.
The four gates, exactly
- Active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business. Active is the operative word. A lapsed subscription ends eligibility no matter what your impressions look like. Basic at $3/mo does not qualify.
- 18 or over. Account holder, not account age.
- 500 verified followers.
- 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions in the prior 90 days, replies excluded.
All four at once. Three out of four is not eligible.
That fourth gate works out to about 5,556 verified impressions per day, every day, for 90 days. It is a backward-looking window, which has a practical consequence people miss: the posting that qualifies you for enrollment on September 8 already happened. If you are short on September 8, the fix is a fresh 90 days of posting, not an appeal.
You can run your own numbers in the Original Content Rewards eligibility checker, which returns a pass or fail on each gate and the exact impression gap, or model the money side in the X earnings calculator.
What disqualifies you
Reposted or reproduced content. Content you did not make does not qualify. Reposts, reuploads, and posts reproduced from elsewhere collect impressions in your analytics but do not earn. The word "Original" in the program name is doing real work.
Engagement solicitation, three or more times. Asking people to like, repost, reply or follow in order to inflate reach. Do it three or more times and you are removed from the program and referred for a policy violation. This is not a deboost or a warning, it is removal plus a referral.
A lapsed Premium subscription. Covered above, worth repeating, because it is the failure mode that catches people who paid annually and forgot.
The engagement-solicitation rule deserves a second look if your posting style leans on "repost if you agree" or "reply with your number." That style earned under the reply-ads model. Under the new one it is a three-strike path out of the program.
How the money works
X does not publish a rate per impression for Original Content Rewards. Anyone quoting you a fixed dollar figure per 1,000 impressions is guessing.
What is published: payouts are biweekly, they are computed on qualified impressions from paying Premium users, and they run through both Stripe and X Money. Stripe has not been removed. If you already had Stripe set up for revenue sharing payouts, that rail still works, and moving to X Money is an option rather than a requirement.
The one structural thing worth internalizing: qualified impressions come from paying Premium users. Your total impression count and your qualified impression count are different numbers, and the second one is the one that pays. An audience heavy on logged-out or non-subscribing readers produces a large analytics number and a small payout.
Why scheduled original posting is the whole game now
The threshold is a 90 day rolling window on original posts. That structure rewards one behavior above all others: posting original content every day without gaps.
The math is unforgiving in a specific way. A week where you post nothing does not just cost you that week's impressions. It sits inside your 90 day window for the next three months, dragging the total, and you cannot go back and fill it. Bursts do not fix it either, because a viral week ages out of the window on a schedule you do not control.
Three things follow.
Post original, not reposted. Reposts do not qualify. Quote-posting someone else's work is not the same as making your own. If half your output is amplification, half your output earns nothing under the new rules.
Post to the Home Timeline, not into reply threads. Replies are excluded. The reply-guy strategy that worked under revenue sharing produces exactly zero qualifying impressions now.
Post on a schedule, not in bursts. 5,556 verified impressions a day, held for 90 days, is a consistency problem more than a reach problem.
This is where a scheduler stops being a convenience. If you write in batches and publish daily, the 90 day window never has a dead stretch. OpenTweet's AI writing tools draft original posts in your voice, the scheduler publishes them on your schedule, and an evergreen queue keeps the calendar full on the days you have nothing new. If you would rather drive it from an agent, the same actions are available over REST at POST https://opentweet.io/api/v1/posts and over MCP at https://mcp.opentweet.io/mcp.
One caution on evergreen recycling: a recycled post of your own writing is your original content, but reposting other people's work is not. Keep the queue full of things you wrote.
If your payouts already stopped
If you saw a payout land and then nothing, check the date. Anything after September 7, 2026 is the old program ending, not a payment failure. There is nothing to appeal and no setting to fix. The next money comes from enrolling in Original Content Rewards on or after September 8, assuming your prior 90 days clear 500,000 verified Home Timeline impressions.
More on that in why did my X payout stop, and the enrollment path is laid out step by step in how to qualify for X Original Content Rewards.
The honest read
For a creator who writes original posts that people read in the timeline, this is a better program. The threshold is lower in absolute terms, the cadence is faster, and the payment does not depend on provoking an argument in your replies.
For a creator whose reach came from replies, reposts, and engagement bait, this is not a threshold change. It is a different business, and the old numbers do not transfer.
The 90 day window is already running. Whatever you post between now and December is what your first several payouts are computed on.
